Pros: Dinosaurs

Cons: Outdated Graphics, Average Shooter

The Dinosaurs are here, you heard me right. Turok, a Nintendo 64 classic finds his way to the PC market after the PS3 and XBOX 360 ones. Even though the storylines, gameplay, AI may not be the best, the presence of Dinosaurs in this shooter makes it worth playing at least once. The story puts you into the shoes of Joseph Turok, who once used to be a member of Wolfpack, a criminal organization but left it due to the ruthless nature of the boss Roland Kane. Now he is the part of the Whiskey company who have been dispatched to capture Kane.

The game beings with the team going to a distant planet to capture Kane, and in between there ship is hit by a missile causing to them to crash in the distant island. And now, the mission is to survive on the jungle which not only contains armed guards, but it is also a place where Dinosaurs roam free and there are also mutated scorpions. Nothing is known what caused the Dinosaurs to be there but they are  fun nonetheless. In the game, sometimes you will be on your own and sometimes accompanied by a teammate. For most of the game, you will be encountering and shooting at Dinosaurs. There will be small reptiles species who have great speed and agility. They will run towards you, bite you and then run away. There speed makes them difficult to target but they get killed quickly. Then there is also a Tyrannosaurus Rex, a big reptile who will shake the ground while moving.

You will have an arsenal of weapons with which to kill. You can use your knife to make a stealth kill, they are the best way to kill the enemy or the dinosaur because a cool animation shows the killing. Then there is also bows and arrows which are pretty cool but there range is very less. But still, it is a nice to way kill someone without getting detected. Then there are those usual weapons such as Machine gun, Shotguns, Chaingun. One of my favourites is the sticky bomb gun. You fire the gun and it will release the bomb which will stick on the target and you can detonate it by pulling the trigger again. The Dinosaurs are nobody’s friends and sometime it will be wiser to stay behind and let them fight with the guards.

Turok 2

The AI of the game is not upto the mark. Sometime you will see soldiers hiding behind the rocks but most of the time, they will fire upon you from the open, keeping themselves vulnerable. Many times you shoot a guard and the nearby guard will just stand there as if nothing has happened. And even your teammates are like that. Once they have decided to blast the enemy, they will do it even if you are in the way of the bullets. There are a few “boss fights” which are very difficult. There is a spider tank that seems to have a mark on your head and shells you heavily without even making a brief break. There is a  huge water dinosaur and the famous T-Rex that is determined to kill you at any cost.

Turok 3

Even though it uses the Unreal 3 engine, the game is now where near to the graphics that you have come to expect from today’s games. The jungles look nothings compared to what you see in Crysis or other games. They just appear dull and bland. But the Dinosaurs have been beautifully modelled and look like real ones. There movements are also fluid. But still it takes a long time to load. And its installation with two Dual Layer DVD’s is a pain.

Turok 4

Overall, you can rate it just like an ordinary shooter. You have to run and kill the enemies with the vast amount of arsenal that you have. The dinosaurs are something different and provide some much needed excitement. But apart from that, it is no different.

Ratings

  • Graphics : 2.5 / 5 ( Outdated compared to recent games )
  • Gameplay : 3 / 5
  • Sound : 3.5 / 5
  • Overall : 2.5 / 5

The only good thing about the game is that it contains Dinosaurs. Other than that, it is an avarage shooter.
