Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 Demo Hands On

The demo of PES 2009 was released yesterday quietly. Being a PES fan, I was quick to download the demo and try it. The latest version is certainly better than the previous version but I was certainly expecting more from Konami. The game starts with the opening video which highlights the games “Be a legend” mode. This mode will be similar to Fifa’s “be a Pro” mode and you will have to control a young player and make him a legend.

But in this case, you will have to force your way into the first team. If you perform badly, you may find your self playing in the lower leagues, play better and you will earn a big transfer to one of the biggest clubs. The more playing time you get, more experience you get. In this mode, your positioning and decisions will all effect the way your future shapes up. There will also be an online legend mode where legends from around the world can play together online. The menu also showed that this time there is a official licensed “UEFA Champions League” tournament but unfortunately, it will not be a part of the Master League mode and you will have to play it separately. Now coming back to the demo, it features six Licensed teams that are Manchester United, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Barcelona, France and Italy. You can play an exhibition match of 5 minutes between them at any difficulty you like.

The interface of PES games have been almost the same and this time it is no different. Selecting the teams and starting the game, you face the similar tasks like selecting sides, strategies, similar to the previous versions. The graphics of the game are nice. The players have been remodeled and many look better compared to what we saw in the PES 2008. But still some of the players look a bit odd. I think the animation could have been improved. Many of the players looks the same when running with the ball. The stadium has also been beautifully modeled and look lively.

Now we come to the gameplay. In PES 2008, the gameplay was very fast but this time, that has been fixed and game is a bit slow than before but that is for the good. The physics have been improved and now the ball and players behave more realistically. The AI is improved and to score the goals, you will have to rely on good passing and not just running with the ball. The CPU will also change there tactics based on the situation. But I noticed a flaw with the goal keeper. Many a times, he made some truly great saves and many a times, he didn’t even move when the ball entered the back of the net. This is something which Konami should look at. The demo had no commentary only a few occasional chants so I cannot comment upon the sound. But I think it will be similar to what we saw in the last version.

The PES fans will certainly be happy as it is better than PES 2008, which was a bit buggy and full of issues. The new Be a Legend mode looks promising and the inclusion of some licensed teams and UEFA Champions League mode makes it more promising. Konami should update there rosters before releasing the game, Manchester United had No Berbatov and still had Saha. I hope to try out the full version when it is released. In the mean time, you can see the gameplay video below which I have created.

Consider giving it a Stumble if you like this post.
