The soccer rivalry between EA Sports’s FIFA series and Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer series will be renewed next month as the next installment of the games are ready to come out. In the recent years, many players have preferred PES over Fifa due to its much realistic gameplay. But since since PES lacks almost all the licenses, some of the originality is lost. Last year, there wasn’t much improvement is Fifa 2008 with regards to gameplay or graphics. But after playing the demo of Fifa 09 on PC, I can say that there has been some big changes this time which makes it a much better game.

The graphics are hugely improved. To be honest, they are the best I have seen from any soccer game so far and I don’t think even PES will be able to match that. The pitch has been made 3d and looks so real. The players are modeled beautifully and look very alive. All these effects help bring a soccer game to life. A massive improvement from the previous games. In the demo, you get to play a exhibition match or a single match in a ‘Be A Pro’ mode where you take control of a single player in a whole match. You can play either as Chelsea, Real Madrid, AC Milan, FC Schalke, Toronto FC, Marseille.

But the real thing comes when we talk about gameplay as that is what people are looking for. The gameplay has also been improved by EA and is much more realistic now. The collision system is very much improved and now you will see player colliding with much bulkier players doing better in those situations. If you are pretty lean, you will even see yourself being outmuscled by the defense. The computer is AI is better now and you will se them getting more organized in there defense or attack. If you are winning, you will see the computer trying a lot of long range shots to get the equalizer. And to score the goal, much more intelligent play will be required as you will have to look for openings in the computer’s defense. Last year, “Be a Pro” mode was introduced which lets you play the game as an individual and develop the player over a complete season. This time you will be able to play the game with a third person camera which was previously available for the XBOX 360 and PS3.

The controls are also changed and this time you can play the game using a combination of keyboard and a mouse if you want. You can click on a pitch using the mouse and one of your players will run to that position. Though it offers much more control, it is very difficult to master and I will stick to my earlier controls only. The PC version will also include a Live online Premium service which will update the player’s stats based on real world performance.

The game will released on October 3rd, 2008. It has been a long time since I have waited for a Fifa game. I will do a full review once I get my hands on the game.
