I have been a huge fan of the F.E.A.R franchise but the last expansion failed to live upto the expectations. A lot is being expected from F.E.A.R 2 Project Origin. I have played the demo which was released recently and would like to share my first impressions about the game.
The game begins with a video which introduces you to Alma and what made here destroy the makers. The first thing which i noticed when the game started was the onscreen HUD which was not there in the previous titles. There is no point of having it here as it does not provide us with much info and can be distracting sometimes. The graphics of the game are decent, they look a lot of similar to previous FEAR titles but when you compare it with the other recent games like Warhead, Dead Space etc, they seem to be outdated. But the lightning and other FX effects will make up for it. The textures and environment are nicely designed but the effects you get while throwing the grenade or during an explosion are amazing. The water effects in the game are also neat.
The game is scary, no doubt about that. The atmosphere will definitely give you the Goosebumps. Walking through dark tunnels, corridors with poor lighting, bone chilling sounds, bodies flying, lockers door opening and closing suddenly, appearance of ALMA suddenly are enough to scare the life out of you. Just play it alone in the room with the lights turned off and good speaker, the scary effect will multiply.
The mechanics of the game are nice and good including that of your weapons. Moving your character may seem a bit slow and there are no lean abilities. The Slow Motion is there are it looks better. There are a lot of weapons which includes Assault Rifle, Shotgun, Sniper Rifle, Laser Gun, Missile launcher and not to mention Frag Grenades, proximity mines etc. In the end of the demo, you will get to wear one of the Mechanical suits or Electronic powered Armor and it is a beauty. You can use Thermal vision, fire rail guns or launch missiles (3-4 at time) and you can see the objects flying around, buildings collapsing with a lot of smoke etc. The game also has a lot of Gore, you will see a lot of blood and body parts lying all around. In some cases, they may seem to be too much.
The Artificial Intelligence of the game is not that good. You will only the see the enemies moving from side to side, ducking behind objects sometimes but ultimately they will come towards you. So that may seem annoying sometimes. At the end of the game, you will be shown some video footage from the full game and that does look interesting.
Overall, it feels like a nice and decent shooter worth playing. I cant comment on the story much based on the demo but it sure is going to be immersive like the previous ones. I played it on my computer with Geforce 8600 GT, 3 GB RAM and it ran at almost high settings with AA enabled. So even if you have an older card, you can run and play it.
