Devil May Cry 4 Review

Our Score

7.5

Pros: Good Action Sequence, Beautiful Graphics and CutScenes, Boss Fights are Fun

Cons: Gamepad required for proper experience, Bad Story

As the name suggests, this is the 4th installment in the Devil May Cry series. I had played Devil May Cry 3(DMC3), and the story in this game is even than DMC3.The story is utterly simple with weak plots. It makes you feel you are watching a big budget and a badly directed action movie. The story doesn’t keeps you motivated enough. In the first half of the game Nero (the main character and a devil like Dante) is in the quest to search Dante and kick his ass. Later in the game he is fighting to save hisgirlfriend (who is cute but not sexy, typical). So you can guess for yourself how bad the story us. But I do appreciate the long cut scenes, which are action packed and powerful with a good background music. The affect of the first scene are visceral and gets you fired up to kick some ass but sadly the story makes you loose your enthusiasm.

Gameplay: The gameplay usually involves killing lots of enemies and occasionally completing some puzzles(which are very simple). The game is typical sword play console game (like ninja gaiden and god of wars). In the first 3 quaters of the game you play as Nero. He also has a big sword, shoots guns, can transform into devil and has a cool devil arm which he can use to grab enemies and throw them away. The devil arm is pretty cool and using the devil arm on different enemies triggers different animations. In the last quater of the game you will play as our favourite devil Dante. He doesn’t have a devil arm but is better than Nero in terms of sword and gun skills. Dante retains all his skills from the previous games.

There are a lot of different types of enemies in the game and each one of them has their own special attack and require a different strategy to kill them. The most fun part in the game are the boss battles. These battles are epic. The bosses are huge. The game feature perhaps 8 to 10 different boss and the good news is you get to kill them both as Dante and Nero. At some instances the game doesn’t make you feel powerful. There are a lot of combos but they are difficult to execute. The tutorials also don’t help much either. The game is badly ported to pc and this effect is very much apparent in the game. The player has to collect something known as blue orbs to unlock and buy new skills. Unfortunately the game is not rewarding in terms of it’s currency which sucks but it probably increases the replay value.

The graphics are breathtaking. The levels as huge and highly detailed. The levels can be anytinf from mountains and forests to big huge vampire like castles. The characted are very well modelled and the fight animation is better than hollywood flicks. The animations are accurate and well paced giving you ample time to savour the results of your deeds. The game does not feature good music in most part of the game. I wish they had more music. The game has only one fight music but the background music for the cutscenes is good.
